JUDA - Youth from Juda and Rockford joined Boy Scout Venture Crew 619 of Rockton for a weekend of fun July 16 to 18 at Bay Jammer 2010.
Bay Jammer is one of the nation's oldest for Boy Scouts, Venture Crews, Explorers, Sea Scouts, Senior Girl Scouts, and Mariner Ships. For 62 years youth have traveled from across the Midwest to attend and compete on the shores of Green Bay in Menominee, Mich.
Bay Jammer is a weekend series of competitions that build on the values of Scouting, encourages teamwork among youth, tests scouting knowledge and perseverance, and brings together scouts ages 14 to 21.
Dan Davis, a Juda School graduate and Crew 619 advisor, has been attending the event for 8 years.
On Friday youth competed in a lip synch competition.
Each crew was allowed to select one nominee for king or queen of Bay Jammers' weekend. Crew 619 held two competitions and chose Andrew Davis and Elliot Klar. The boys had to answer a question they selected on stage, prepare a written response to questions provided by the selection committee, and attend a personal interview. They each designed name tags denoting them as candidates and were asked to be present at the formal dance on Saturday.
Friday ended with a street dance then back to the lodging where a surprise birthday cake was present for the 18-year-old Klar. The youth then got down to business deciding who would participate in Saturday's events.
Saturday's competition events included swimming and inner tube relays, marlin spike, compass relay, log sawing, pulling boat, sand sculpting, mini-Olympics, first aid, canoe race, bucket brigade, ring buoy toss, log rolling, drilling and maneuvering.
Other Saturday events included a parade of the units and formal dance. For Crew 619 it was then back to the lodging at 11 p.m. where a game of Apples to Apples broke out. Then it was time to assign morning cleanup chores.
Sunday's triathlon was canceled due to inclement weather but the volleyball and tug of war tournaments were held. Sunday was also time to say good-bye to outgoing member (end of age limit), Sam Grinnell.
Crew 619 has many upcoming events planned including the Barnyard Bash and Snowstorm competitions.
