UW-Rock offers noncredit courses

JANESVILLE - The office of continuing education at University of Wisconsin-Rock County is offering several non-credit courses that are open to the public. All of these courses meet on the UW-Rock County campus at 2909 Kellogg Ave.

- Lego NXT: Robot Build, Program and Competition, from 9 a.m. to noon, Feb. 5, 9, 12 and 26, in room 29 of Williams Hall on the campus. This course for students in grades 4 through 8 lets them start the fast track to the world of robots and engineering. The course, taught by Sandy Lunenburg, combines hands on science, technology and computer programming to create moveable robots that the students will engage in friendly team competitions. The fee is $94.

- Connecting Through Computers: An Introduction to Social Networking, at 6:30 p.m. This course meets Tuesdays, Feb. 8 through March 1, in Williams Hall Room 29. Adults who are looking for ways to connect online to friends and family or to build business connections can register for this class taught by Edna Feldman-Schultz. Learn about social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, blogs and Skype and how they can be used to enhance personal and professional networks. Participants will set up free accounts and get hands-on experience, plus tricks, tips and demonstrations from the instructor. The course is $25.

- The ABCs of Auditioning, at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 9 through March 16, in Wells Cultural Center Room 129. Veteran actor Michael Chase will help adults and teens break into acting with these tips for nailing auditions. Participants will gain insight into preparing to audition/try-out for plays and musical theater, get experience reading "cold" from a script, pick up tips for memorizing a monologue, and choose a song for musical tryouts. The fee for the course is $39.
