MONROE - The last picnic in a three-part free community picnic series led by Green County UW-Extension will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, on the lawn of the Monroe Arts Center.
"Stirring the Pot: Dialogue, Discussion and Dinner in the Dairyland" is an engaging forum for area residents to gather and learn more about creating a healthy, green and sustainable local food system. This third and final picnic features a fall theme, with discussion focused on "Autumn Harvest and Preserving for the Future." Watch Kurt Kline with the Monroe Farmer's Market and Blackhawk Technical College's Chef Joe Wollinger demonstrate seasonal recipes focusing on salads and desserts. Shakespeare on the Edge will organize a kids' activity area and musician Bill Rientz will entertain with his band, "The Love Bunglers." Try a snowcone made with locally-grown blackberry syrup made by Noel Workman of Noel's Jams and Jelly of Albany. This picnic is the debut of the "Community of a Plate" collaborative project between Green County UW Extension and Minnesota-based Renewing the Countryside.
Bring a picnic and blanket or lawn chairs and help reduce waste at this event by bringing reusable dishware. For those with disabilities who need table seating, call Cara Carper, UW-Extension 328-9441 or e-mail: cara.carper@ces.uwex.edu. No reservation is needed. The event will be held inside the Monroe Arts Center in case of rain.
