MONROE - All farmers and their employees who load, mix, handle or apply "restricted-use" pesticides must complete a pesticide applicator training course and pass a written exam every five years. There is a $30 fee for materials per private applicator. Applicators receive a training manual and study guide to help them prepare for the training session and evaluation.
An exam must be taken after completing the classroom session or after a self study course at home. Successful completion (50 percent if attending the class; 70 percent independent study) of either will satisfy the requirement for certification or re-certification. Those farmers with certifications that have expired before the 2010 cropping season should have received a letter from the Department of Agriculture in early December.
Two training sessions and one test-only session will be held for Green County farmers in 2010. Approximately 40 Green County producers' certification will expire before the 2010 crop season and will need to be re-certified.
Dates and times are:
Split Day Session - Must score 50 percent or higher on exam, 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 4 and 5;
One Day Session - Must score 50 percent or higher on exam, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16;
Test Only Session - Must score 70 percent or higher on exam, 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 4
Pre-registration is required. Pre-register by paying the fees and receiving the training materials at the Green County UW-Extension Office, Monroe. For more information, contact the UW-Extension Office at (608) 328-9440.
