NEW GLARUS - "Universe in the Park" will return to New Glarus Woods State Park at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, with a program presented by the UW-Madison's Department of Astronomy.
The program begins at sunset in the New Glarus Woods Chattermark Amphitheater, with a slideshow of pictures of stars and galaxies taken from the Hubble Space Telescope.
Once the sky is dark, everyone will have the opportunity to look through a moderate 8" aperture astronomical telescope to view stars and planets, as well as the Perseids meteor shower, which peaks Aug. 12 to 13. Mercury will also be easy to spot just before dawn. Attendees may wish to bring a flashlight or arrive early to find seats in the Amphitheater before sunset. Parking is available in the state park with either a daily admission sticker or an annual Wisconsin State Park sticker.
The free event is hosted by the Friends of the New Glarus Woods State Park.
