MONROE — Turner Hall of Monroe will celebrate Switzerland’s 728th birthday Aug. 1. The building is the only Turner Hall of Swiss origin left in the United States.
Aug. 1 is National Swiss Day and commemorates the writing of the Swiss Federal Charter of 1291 when the cantons (states) of Schwyz, Uri and Unterwalden swore the oath of confederation, an action which later came to be regarded as the founding of Switzerland.
The event at Turner Hall Aug. 1 is open to the public and will be held in the Grand Hall starting at 5 p.m. with a social hour and silent auction followed by an authentic Swiss dinner buffet at 6 p.m. A short program of entertainment will be at 7 p.m.
The all-inclusive evening, featuring a buffet of Kalberwurst, Gschnetzelts, Roesti, Alpler Macaroni and Swiss Green Beans will also offer a cash bar.
Attendees will be treated to alphorns, accordion music, Swiss flag-throwing, colorful costumes and decorations and authentic Swiss folk music performed by the Monroe Swiss Singers.
Reservations are required, and payment must be made at the time of reservation.
To make a reservation, call 608-325-3461 or stop by Turner Hall’s Ratskeller Restaurant during business hours.
Diners are welcome and encouraged to wear Swiss attire if desired.
