Turner Hall seeks hosts for youth band members

MONROE - The Turner Hall of Monroe is seeking local people and families to host members of a 73-member youth band from eastern Switzerland who will be in Monroe from July 14 - 17.

The "Knabenmusik der Stadt St. Gallen" will appear on Turner Hall's Grand Hall stage as part of its 2010 Swiss Heritage Series 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 15. As the last leg of a Midwestern tour organized by the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan, the band will arrive in Monroe by bus on Wednesday, July 14, and leave for O'Hare Airport on Saturday, July 17.

In addition to being able to perform, the tour is an opportunity for young Swiss to experience American life by staying with a family for three days as sort of a mini-cultural exchange. Food, lodging and transportation to and from the rehearsal and concert at Turner Hall is required; sight-seeing and/or shopping trips with the host families are appreciated, but not required.

The Swiss student musicians range in age from 14 to young adult.

Several German and instrumental music students' families from Monroe High School have already volunteered to act as hosts for the Swiss band, but many more are needed.

Because of the large size of the group, it is helpful if families can host more than one student. Each student must have his/her own bed, but not necessarily his/her own bedroom.

Prior to coming to Monroe, the band will stay and perform in three locations in Michigan. Monroe will be their final stop, as well as their only performance site that has Swiss roots.
