MONROE - The Green County Historical Society will be organizing volunteers to inventory barn and farmstead buildings throughout Green County during early spring.
The purposes of the survey are to identify rural buildings and farmsteads that contribute significantly to the character of the community or illustrate agricultural heritage; heighten awareness of the decline of older farm buildings; and provide a community service that is an educational experience for survey participants.
The survey will involve written and photographic documentation of barns and other buildings on the properties. Volunteers will drive on roads within a township and conduct a "windshield survey" of each barn they see.
The township's barn photographs, maps and architectural information will be part of a database on the Green County Historical Society's website.
A training session for volunteers will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 27 in the second-floor meeting room of the Monroe Public Library. For additional information or to join the mailing list, visit greencountywihistoricalsociety.org.
