MONROE — Monroe Theater Guild (MTG) is bringing a 2001 Tony-award-winning play to its stage. “Proof”, written by David Auburn, is part of the Colony Brands Performance Series, premiering on the Colony Brands Stage in late June.

When this 4-person play premiered on Broadway in 2000, it garnered instant acclaim for its sensitive treatment of mental illness, family dynamics, sibling rivalry, and the quirky nature of genius. In addition to claiming the Tony Award for Best New Play, it also won the Pulitzer Prize for Best New Dramatic Literature and the Drama Desk Award/Outstanding Achievement for Best New Play.

This riveting story is set in the University of Chicago neighborhood of Hyde Park, south of Chicago. Catherine, a talented woman in her late 20s, gave up her education to take care of her ailing father, a world-famous mathematician, while her older sister Claire left for a career in New York. While Catherine may have inherited her father’s mathematical genius, she may also be afflicted with his mental disorder.

Hal, a former graduate student of Catherine’s father, has discovered a brilliant mathematical proof among her father’s old notebooks. He doesn’t believe Catherine’s claim that she herself wrote this history-changing proof.

As Claire swoops in and tries to relocate Catherine to New York, the story continues with Catherine caught in a whirlwind of doubts, suspicion, selfishness, and control against the backdrop of slowly losing a parent to disease. This play contains adult language and tough discussions concerning mental health issues.
