FREEPORT - Winneshiek Players will present "The Last Night of Ballyhoo," opening on Saturday, May 7. A special performance is being held Friday, May 6 as a fundraiser for the Freeport Public Library Foundation.

The play will also be presented May 12, 13 and 14. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. at the Winneshiek Playhouse, 228 West Clark St., Freeport.

"Ballyhoo," written by Alfred Uhry, award-winning playwright of "Driving Miss Daisy," opens in Atlanta in December of 1939. Hitler has invaded Poland. The premiere of "Gone with the Wind" is the next day. But the biggest concern of the Freitag family is finding a suitable date for daughter Lala to Ballyhoo, a lavish ball for Jewish socialites. When Uncle Adolf brings Joe - his new, very eligible assistant - home for dinner, the romantic schemes begin.

"This story is filled with humor and insight as a family learns to live and love together," said director Tana Gundry. "It is an appealing story that tells the timeless tale of the old and the young facing life together."

The "Ballyhoo" cast includes Winneshiek veterans Rich Burkinshaw, Fiona Howard, Pat Leitzen-Fye, and Andy Golz. Making their debut on the Winneshiek stage are David Jacobs, Amie Bommelje and Eryn Faught.

In addition to Gundry as director, the creative team includes assistant director Kimber Baal and producer Mark Jansen.

Tickets cost $12 and are general admission; group rates are available. Reserve tickets by calling the Playhouse box office at (815) 232-7023 or by e-mail at tickets@wplay.org.
