Swiss Colony named bakery of the month

WEST ALLIS - The bakery at Swiss Colony, Monroe, was named the Bakery Operation of the Month for April 2009 from the Wisconsin Bakers Association (WBA). The business earned the honor for hosting the WBA's Bakers Forum in April, which is a networking and educational event for WBA members and other baking industry representatives.

"The Swiss Colony Bakery was started in 1954 where a handful of master bakers from Austria and Germany brought with them expertise, experience, formulations and processes which reflected European Old World Traditions," said Arthur Bartsch, vice president and chief Innovation Officer (CIO) of The Swiss Colony. "Many of our formulas today still reflect the influence of European konditorei."

According to Bartsch, The Swiss Colony employs approximately 1,100 permanent, full-time employees and a little more than 5,000 temporary employees. The company is located in 15 different cities. The other cities the business is located in, besides Monroe, are Madison, Dickeyville, Janesville, and Racine, Wis.; Peosta, Clinton, DeWitt, and Davenport, Iowa; Savanna, Westmont, and Rockford, Ill.; Hannibal, Mo.; Reno, Nevada; and Shanghai, China. Nominations for Bakery Operation of the Month are submitted to the WBA office for consideration. Selected operations must include the following criteria to be considered: must be a WBA member in good standing; must have made non-monetary contributions to the bakery industry and Wisconsin Bakers Association; have something that qualifies the bakery as an outstanding business; and winner would agree to have the award publicized in the media.

In addition, winners of the Bakery Operation of the Month are considered for the Bakery Operation of the Year (BOY) award. The first BOY award was given in 2001 to recognize an outstanding WBA member bakery operation. The current Bakery Operation of the Year is O&H Danish Bakery in Racine.
