MONROE - Registration is underway for Make a Splash summer programs and workshops at the Monroe Public Library, for children and students ages 3 to 18.
Children and students of all ages will be able to choose their own reading fun this summer. Brochures describing the programs and events are available in the children's room of the library. There is no charge for any of the summer programs.
Young readers may register online at www.monroepubliclibrary.org, or in person at the Youth Services desk. Children may join the program at any time during the summer.
Students entering first through sixth grades may participate in the Make a Splash Reading Challenge, a reading rewards program. Prizes include books, T-shirts, and other prizes. Pizza Hut will provide a coupon for a free personal size pizza for readers completing four weeks of the program.
Wild Wednesday programs for students entering first through fifth grades feature professional performers and hands-on learning opportunities. All Wild Wednesday events will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons from June 16 to July 28.
Students may register now for the first two Wild Wednesday programs by calling or stopping by the youth services department. Registration for other Wild Wednesday events will be taken two weeks before each program.
The Beach Party Kick-Off at 1:30 p.m. June 16 leads the schedule of Wild Wednesday programs. Hula and Limbo lessons, water games and a shell craft are included. This program takes place outside, weather permitting, and students may get wet. Participants are encouraged to wear hats, sunscreen and sunglasses.
The second Wild Wednesday program, The Music Man Mini Musical, take place from 1:30 to 3 p.m. June 23. Under the guidance of the Monroe Theatre Guild, participants will learn the music and choreography for "The Wells Fargo Wagon," a song from The Music Man, the MTG summer production. The cast will perform their Mini Musical for family and friends at 2:45 p.m.
On June 30, students will be Down at the Swamp for an afternoon of water science, swamp monsters and tale-telling.
Would-be herpetologists may choose from two programs by Tom Kessenich and Snakes Alive! on July 7, 1:30 or 3 p.m. Each time Kessenich visits the Monroe Public Library he brings a surprise.
Rollin' on the River, July 14, will introduce children to the mighty Mississippi River in an afternoon of Riverboat Magic, story-telling, and an opportunity to be a contestant on the famous Mississippi River trivia show, Go Fish!
The Pirates, Ahoy program on July 21has kids hunting for treasure, playing Walk the Plank Games and learning to talk like pirates.
Rounding out the Wild Wednesday programs will be a special appearance by Monroe's Jane Swiggum when she presents Black Light Camp Returns. The program takes place under the safe purple glow of black light and will feature puppets, live action, and undersea scenes.
Reading Explorers, a reading rewards program for children age 3 to 6, including children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall, began June 7. Youngsters may read with an adult or older student, record their reading time and earn free books, a reading hat, and hat trims.
Special programs for Reading Explorers include Picture Book Stories, held at 10 a.m each Thursday. Each program features books and stories, songs and rhymes, plus activities, snacks or crafts. Reading Explorers may register up to two weeks in advance of these Wild Wednesday programs and then join one of the two Snakes Alive programs at 1:30 or 3 p.m. July 7 and Black Light Camp Returns at 1:30 p.m. July 28
Tuesday evenings in June and July bring Summer Family Fun Nights to the Monroe Public Library. Family nights feature special family entertainers and story programs. The season begins June 15 with Froggy Festival. Froggy Festival will include stories, games, a craft and the 15-minute, live-action movie based on Mercer Mayers book, Frog Goes to Dinner.
The library's teen Ready-Or-Not Readers Theater troupe will present The Fish Wife to a family audience at 6:30 p.m. July 13. Interested middle and high school students may contact Laurie Solawetz, youth services assistant, for more information.

Activities include lunch at the library during Brown Bag Art opportunities, the Ready-Or-Not Players, Pirate Day, special programs on outdoor activities and an end-of-summer luau.
