JUDA - A team of Juda Middle School students won the Wisconsin state Odyssey of the Mind competition on April 13.

The students beat seven other teams and will compete at the world finals from Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25 at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich.

The Odyssey of the Mind program provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members work to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.

Juda sent two Division II teams to the state Odyssey of the Mind competition in Madison, with one team advancing on to the world's competition with a solution for the "Tumble - wood" problem. This year, a Division III level team, which is the high school level, also competed at state and received fourth place. A primary level team, made up of first- and second-graders, also took part in the competition.

The seven Juda students on the World Finals qualifying team are eighth-graders Aurora Daniels and Alexis Goecks and seventh-graders Nickole Becker, Mackenzie Byrne, Erika Duecker, Courtney Fortney and Brooke Kamholz. These students competed in the "Tumble - wood," a balsa wood structure problem with a large focus in how much weight the structure could hold after it tumbled down a team-made ramp. They also produced a creative skit and song as part of

their performance with

the problem.

This is Juda's third year competing in the Odyssey of the Mind program. As many as 750 teams from around the world will compete at the world finals. To make it to world finals, teams must have placed first in their state tournament and received a qualifying score.
