ALBANY - Students from the Albany School District will compete in the first round of the 2014 National Geography Bee at noon Wednesday, Jan. 8 in the high school gymnasium at Albany schools, 400 5th St.
The event is open to the public. The snow day is Thursday, Jan. 9.
There will be 10 Albany students in fourth through eighth grade, two from each grade, competing.
For the 26th year, the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geography Bee in thousands of schools across the United States and in the five U.S. territories, as well as in Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world. Albany will be competing for the 25th year.
The winner of Albany's Bee will advance to the next level of competition; a written examination to determine the state competitors will be held on Friday, April 4. All state winners are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize of a $50,000 college scholarship at the national competition held Monday, May 19 through Wednesday, May 21.
