Still openings for fall Park & Rec programs

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department has openings in the following programs. People interested in signing up for any of the programs are asked to stop in at the Park and Recreation Department, located in the basement of City Hall, 1110 18th Ave. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with someone in the office over the noon hour. • Youth center classes are open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Cost to participate is $6 per class. Pre-registration is required, as some classes are limited to 24 participants.

• Football with the Cheesemakers, 1 to 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, at the MHS Practice Field. Come meet and complete drills with the Cheesemakers. Drills will include; catching, throwing, kicking and blocking. Wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. Everyone will receive a T-shirt donated by Monsignor Campion. Rain site - MHS gyms

• Volleyball with the Cheesemakers, 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at the MHS Gym. Play with the Lady Cheesemakers. Girls will learn volleyball drills and skills. This class is open to girls in fourth through eighth grade. Wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. Everyone will receive a T-shirt donated by Monsignor Campion.

• Cyber Bowling and Halloween Tricks and Treats, 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29. Drop your child(ren) off at Turner Hall for Cyber bowling; the group will walk back to the Youth Center for ghouly games, arts and crafts along with snacks. Pick up your child(ren) at the Park and Recreation Office.

• Mad Science Mini Camps are coordinated and taught by Mad Science employees from the Milwaukee area. The price for the class was set by the company to cover instructors' cost, supplies and travel time. Classes are appropriate for K5-7 grade, older students if they would like to participate. Each workshop is filled with hands-on experiments and take-home items. Minimum class size is 12 children - if minimum is not met one week before, class will be canceled, so sign up early. Cost for the Mad Science Mini Camps is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents.

• Bubbles....Smoke.....Bang! 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, October 30, at Community Center

Mad Science invites you to have fun with chemistry in this exciting camp. Watch a film canister explode. Learn about the solar system and make a comet using everyday items. Kids will love to make our neon slime and cool Mad Science Bouncy Ball to take home. Bring a sack lunch and drink for break time.

• Reactions in Action, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, November 7, at Community Center

Junior Scientists will discover the science of energy, color and light while using indoor fireworks and working with lasers. Bring a sack lunch and drink for break time.

• Winter Playtime Preschool program meets 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Fridays, Oct. 16, Oct. 23, Nov. 6, Nov. 13, Nov. 20, Dec. 4, Dec. 11, Dec. 18, Jan. 8, Jan. 15 and Jan. 22. Cost to participate is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. The objectives of Winter Playtime are to have the children learn how to follow rules, share, listen, get along with others, and make new friends while making crafts, listening to stories, free-time and playing games inside. All activities are held inside the Community Center for winter playtime. Children must be potty trained.

• Children's Dance will be held on Sundays, Oct. 4 through Nov. 22, at the Community Center. Rebecca Flannery and Hannah Knutson are the instructors for the program. Cost to participate is $26 for residents and $36 for non-residents. Class times are as follows:

Dancing with Elmo and Friends, for children ages 3 to 5 years old, 5 p.m. to 5:40 p.m.;

Pretty, Pretty, Princess Ballet I, for children ages 3 to 5 years old, 5:45 p.m. to 6:25 p.m.;

Pretty, Pretty, Princess Ballet II, for children 5 years and older, 6:30 p.m. to 7:10 p.m. This class is for children who have taken classes before or have been approved by the instructor.
