Stepping On workshop supports safer aging in Green County

MONROE — September is recognized nationwide as Falls Prevention Month, drawing attention to one of the leading health concerns for older adults. In recognition of this important observance, the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Green County, in partnership with SSM Health Monroe, will be hosting a Stepping On workshop at the SSM Health Clinic in Monroe.

The seven-week program, beginning in September, is designed to help older adults reduce their risk of falls through education, practice, and expert guidance. Participants will learn strength and balance exercises, review medications that may affect stability, hear from specialists including a vision expert, pharmacist, and physical therapist, and much more.

“Falls can have a life-changing impact, but they are not an inevitable part of aging,” said Laura Steiner, ADRC’s Education & Prevention Specialist. “This workshop provides practical tools and strategies to help older adults remain safe, confident, and independent.”

One in four people age 65 or older has a fall each year — don’t be one of them. Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults, but research shows that programs like Stepping On can reduce the risk of falling by up to 31%.

Workshop Details:

●  Dates: Fridays, Sept. 5 — Oct. 17

●  Time: 9 a.m. — 11 a.m.

●  Location: SSM Health Monroe Clinic in Monroe

The workshop is open to adults age 60 and older who have experienced a fall or are concerned about falling. A $15 donation is suggested, and pre-registration is required as space is limited. There are no residency restrictions — you do not need to be an SSM Health patient to participate.
