MONROE - The annual Green County Steer Weigh-In will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 27, at Equity Livestock, located south of Monroe. In case of inclement weather, an announcement will be made on WEKZ radio prior to 8 a.m. on De. 27, and the weigh-in will be re-scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 10.
Exhibitors must have their steers weighed and identified on Dec. 27 to be eligible to participate in the 2009 Green County Junior Steer Show, Carcass Show, and Livestock Auction. Each exhibitor can identify a maximum of five steers. New U.S.D.A. radio frequency tags will be used this year to identify steers. Exhibitors will be required to provide the premise ID number for the farm where the steers will be housed, and also sign an avadavat certifying that their steers were born in the United States as part of the new Country of Origin Legislation (COOL).
Exhibitors must either reside within Green County or be a member of a Green County 4-H Club or FFA Chapter to identify steers for the Green County Fair.
Exhibitors are reminded that steers must have a rate of gain of two or more pounds per day to be eligible to enter the carcass contest or to be sold in the Green County Fair Livestock Auction. The minimum County fair auction weights are 1,300 pounds for dairy steers, 1,100 pounds for all beef market steers. All steers must meet these minimum final weights at fair time to be eligible to sell in the livestock auction and to participate in the carcass contest.
This year exhibitors can also have their steers identified and weighed for the Wisconsin State Fair at the Monroe weigh-in site. Exhibitors that are identifying steers for state fair do not have to reside in Green County or be a member of a Green County 4-H club or FFA Chapter. State fair steers will have DNA hair samples taken for accurate identification and State Fair exhibitors will charged a $10 fee for each steer that is identified for the Wis. State Fair.
The Green County Beef Producers will be assisting with the weigh-in. Record books for the Green County Meat Animal Sale will also be distributed to all exhibitors at the weigh-in. For more information regarding the weigh-in, contact Mark Mayer, Green County UW-Extension Dairy and Livestock Agent at (608) 328-9440.
