MONROE - The statewide 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl and Skillathon contest was held on Saturday, March 1 in the Department of Animal Sciences building at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The event was open to 4-H youth members who participated in teams of beginners, mixed and senior youth and was organized and facilitated by Extension Youth Livestock Specialist Bernie O'Rourke.

The Skillathon contest was made up of a written quiz and learning stations such as breed identification, feed identification and equipment identification, as well as some team activities such as demonstrating evaluation skills. The top senior level 4-H team will represent Wisconsin at the national 4-H Skillathon Contest, held each fall in Louisville, Ky.

Competition in Quiz Bowl and Skillathon encourages members to develop a more complete knowledge of animals and related subjects. The contest provides an educational program for all project members, including those who may not own a project animal, and provides a way to develop self-confidence. These programs parallel similar programs that breed associations and other organizations conduct, such as Junior Cattle Nationals, NJSA (National Junior Swine Association) and the All-American Sheep Show.

The Green County Beginner Team placed fourth in the Quiz Bowl and ninth overall in Skillathon. Members were Reece Rufer, Hiawatha 4-H; Natalie Roe, Washington Center 4-H; Colten Beckman, Clarno 4-H; and Kyle Marty, Clarno 4-H.

The Green County Mixed Team placed fifth in the Quiz Bowl and fifth overall in the Skillathon. Team members were Brittany Beckman, Clarno; Elly Beckman, Clarno; Alexa Marty, Clarno; and Mitchell Grossen, Cheese Country Clovers.

The Green County Senior Team placed 11th in the Quiz Bowl and sixth overall in Skillathon. Members were Troy Gorr, Jolly Mixers; Kelsey Klitzman, Dayton Dairylanders; Dani Schneider, Clarence Bridge Pioneers; and Marley Malkow, Jolly Mixers.
