MONROE — SSM Health Monroe Clinic Medical Group pediatricians are introducing an innovative approach to early childhood development: prescribing play.

The initiative, called “Prescription for Play,” is a national program endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). It is designed for children 18 to 36 months old.

“Prescription for Play encourages families to foster learning and growth through hands-on experiences,” said SSM Health Monroe Clinic Medical Group Pediatrician Dr. Heather Reichert. “Hands-on imaginative play teaches confidence and self-control, builds problem-solving skills, and encourages communication.”

As part of the program, families who see pediatricians at SSM Health Monroe Clinic Medical Group will receive a LEGO Duplo block kit during one well-child visit within the 18 to 36 age range. Providers will also share guidance on the importance of play and advocate for reducing screen time.

“The kit includes an instruction booklet, but I’ve already seen families come up with creative ideas beyond what’s suggested,” said Dr. Reichert.

Parents often ask how they can support their child’s development. According to Dr. Reichert, the answer is simple: play and read.

“Families are busy juggling schedules, but we hope that Prescription for Play will help them to make time for fun and connection,” she said.
