SSM Health Monroe Clinic Medical Group debuts new Healing Garden
Healing garden offers tranquility to local oncology patients

MONROE — What was a flat and grassy area outside of SSM Health Monroe Clinic Medical Group’s Oncology department has been transformed into a beautiful Healing Garden. The Healing Garden features river rock, trees, bushes, boulders, lighting and more.

The Healing Garden’s location was purposefully selected to serve as a peaceful, healing view for the patients from within the clinic while also acting as a natural privacy screen from the sidewalk and parking lot. Now the chemotherapy and infusion patient rooms’ large windows blend the natural light and privacy of the Healing Garden. Each piece was strategically placed for optimal coverage as time progresses and the plants expand.

Many partners came together for the planning and implementation of the garden. Before plans were drawn, Monroe’s Oncology team created a survey that was presented to patients and staff asking for input on what the ideal Healing Garden would look like to them. The responses were compiled, and SSM Health worked with a local landscape team to design the garden.

A layout was constructed to provide a pleasing appearance from both inside and outside the clinic. There was also purposeful intention in the garden’s ability to withstand the helipad and downwash from the takeoffs and landings.

The plants, stone and other materials were all selected to provide a colorful display in all four seasons. Nighttime uplighting will add warmth and beauty during the early winter evenings. The Healing Garden will also eliminate the need for mowing and help with overall noise reduction.

“Natural environments play a significant role in reducing stress and anxiety, providing a tranquil setting,” said Sue Campbell, Cancer Care and Palliative Care Manager at SSM Health Monroe Clinic Medical Group. “The intent was to provide a positive therapeutic presence for our patients and families, as well as having a positive impact on our staff.”

The Healing Garden was funded through the Monroe Clinic & Hospital Foundation as a part of the Infusion Clinic Expansion and supported with a generous lead gift from donors Linda and Byron H.

“While they no longer live in Monroe, Linda and Byron made a contribution that will grow with renewal and resilience,” said Jane Sybers, Monroe Clinic & Hospital Foundation Executive Director. “The gift of this garden leaves their lasting green thumbprint to inspire hope and healing for patients and staff alike.”

Patients and staff are already benefiting from the Healing Garden as comments have been shared by a patient who “no longer focuses on who is walking by the windows” and now watches the birds that the landscaping draws in.
