MONROE - The Shanty Town youth event sponsored by the Homelessness Prevention Coalition of Green County will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13th on the Courthouse lawn.

Green County Human Services has seen 115 unduplicated households that were homeless or near homeless so far in 2010. Last year, there were 112 such households.

Youth will be raising funds to help the coalition at the event. They will seek donations that night and experience a bit of what it may be like to be homeless. They will set up large boxes or tents, eat at a soup kitchen and experience the November chill.

The schedule of events includes:

- 5 p.m.: Registration and setting up tents or boxes

- 5:30 p.m.: Speakers on local issues of homelessness

- 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.: Cell phone calls and "panhandling"

- 7:15 to 8 p.m.: "Soup Kitchen," cheese and crackers and water

- 8 to 9 p.m.: Music, images of homelessness, more cell phone calls and panhandling.
