MONROE - The Sexual Assault Recovery Program (SARP) will take part in the Chili Cook-Off Oct. 2 in Monroe and will be doing children's face painting at a booth on the Courthouse Square. All community members are invited to visit their booth to find out more about SARP and possible volunteer opportunities.
SARP is always looking for volunteer support, vital to the SARP program in order to cover on-call shifts and other duties, as well as accomplishing the program's mission and goals.
SARP of Green County is a non-profit victim advocacy program that serves the entire Green County area. Services include providing medical, legal and personal advocacy for sexual assault victims and their families. SARP also provides limited professional counseling and referrals to services in the area. SARP advocates respond to crisis calls 24/7 at the emergency room or wherever needed.
In 2009, Sexual Assault Recovery Program of Green County responded to 83 sexual assault cases in Green County, but the numbers don't represent the real number of sexual assault cases. Sexual assault is an underreported crime; only 5 percent to 20 percent of sexual assault victims report their attack.
People in need of assistance from the Sexual Assault Recovery Program, can call their 24-hour crisis hotline at (866) 666-4576. People with questions, concerns, or interested in finding out about volunteer opportunities can call (608) 324-2444.
