MONROE — “Scouting for Food” is an ongoing annual program of the Boy Scouts of America in which scouts collect food for their local pantry.

In Monroe, the “Scouting for Food” drive is typically held in March or April, but due to COVID-19 that wasn’t possible.

However, in July the scouts held the event over two Saturdays on July 18 and 25. On July 18 scouts left flyers on doors for residents to let them know about the drive and to leave food if they wouldn’t be home the following Saturday for collection. A few Monroe residents decided to give food and money during that time knowing they wouldn’t be home.

Scouts spent the day July25 collecting food. There were 27 scouts, some as young as age 7, with help from their families worked together to collect 1,298 pounds of food and supplies and $90 in cash for the Green County Food Pantry.

This is the first time that people have donated cash during the “Scouting for Food” drive and the pantry was very appreciative as they will be able to purchase more supplies.

The pack is grateful to Monroe residents who donated and to the girl scouts, Pack 101 Cub Scouts, and to Troops 101, 114 and 180 for working hard in the heat.
