MONROE — The School District of Monroe ELL Department announced that it has received a grant from the Monroe Excellence in Education Funds Spring 2024 Grant Cycle of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Inc. to support their projects entitled Translation Earbuds for Student Services and Talking Points.
Both programs serve as ways to better serve the English Language Learner community of Monroe. Translation Earbuds for Student Services will serve the ELL students in four schools: Northside, Parkside, Monroe Middle School, and Monroe High School. Student Services in each school will use the earbuds to provide counseling services for ELL students, regardless of the student’s preferred language or the counselor’s language abilities.
Talking Points is intended to help school staff communicate better with ELL parents but also all parents. Talking Points allows school staff to communicate directly with parents through an app or through text messages in a way that connects to their school email and not their own personal phone number. All communication is auto-translated into the parent’s preferred language. The parent can then respond in their preferred language and it will auto-translate into the teacher’s preferred language. This program will allow parents who don’t use email or can’t call during school hours an easier way to communicate with the school.
These grants are made available from the Community Foundation’s Excellence in Education Fund for Monroe Schools.
