MONROE - "Saxtet Plus" is back by popular demand. This big band comes to Monroe Thursday for the fifth of this summer's free Concert on the Square series. The performance is slated for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the north side of the Square.
The concerts are sponsored by Monroe Main Street and underwritten with major funding from the Monroe Fund, Monroe Clinic, and Evergreen. Those attending should bring their own lawn chairs.
Saxtet Plus is a true big band with five saxophones, six to eight brass, full rhythm section and a featured vocalist. The group is the premier flagship band of Ken Kilian Musical Services. In 2009, "Saxtet Plus" brought the largest crowd to the concert series.
Box lunches will be available at Café Claudeen's, Turner Hall, Pancho and Lefty's and the Garden Deli. Ruf's Confectionery will also be open during the concerts. All are located on or near the Square. Special Olympics volunteers will be selling popcorn as a fundraiser. Bartels Pub and Ruf's provide the popcorn to the group free of charge.
Beverages will be available at a beer tent sponsored by the Green County Humane Society.
In the event of inclement weather, the concerts will move to either Turner Hall or the Monroe Middle School, both located just two blocks south of the Square. Signs will be posted directing people to either location and announced on WEKZ.
Upcoming concerts include "The Jimmys" on Aug. 19.
Information is available by calling Karen Stollenwerk at (608) 328-1767.
