DARLINGTON — Lots of holiday fun is planned for Dec. 6 in Darlington including special hours at the Darlington Depot. The Depot and Caboose will be open from 2:30 to 7 p.m. The Christmas Train will be among the many model trains running and the Caboose will serve free hot cider and popcorn (donations welcome). After the parade, Santa will visit with the kids at the Depot and the light displays in the campground will surprise and delight.
The Lafayette County Historical and Genealogy Society (LCHGS) is celebrating completion of the caboose restoration over the past year. With help of grants from the Milwaukee Road Historical Association and the National Railway Historical Society, finish carpentry skills of Danny Lange and volunteer efforts of James Bennett and Barb Nemec, the interior restoration greets visitors with the look of a real 1937 working caboose. Decorated with lights for the holidays, it’s ready for the fun and excitement of visits with Santa.
Fundraising continues for the historic sites operated by LCHGS as engraved bricks can be purchased to be added to the brick patio beside the caboose. Order forms are available at the Depot and the Museum on Main Street, or a brick can be ordered by sending $50 and a note regarding the desired engraving (two lines up to 13 spaces each) to 525 Main Street, Darlington, WI 53530. Engrave bricks can honor a loved one, add a personalized “mark,” or make a unique gift for someone.
Dec. 6 will be a great opportunity to see the finished caboose. LCHGS Depot and Caboose can be opened to visitors by request. For additional opportunities, call 608-776-8340 at least two business days in advance and they will coordinate staff to open for a visit.
