River Valley ramps up art classes

BLANCHARDVILLE - Blanchardville's River Valley Trading Company, an art and retail incubator located on Main Street, is offering a varied palette of art classes and experiences in May. Participants can tour the latest gallery offering, a colorful show of abstract paintings called "What Color is The Wind?" while learning to create quilts, watercolors, pastel landscapes and woodcut prints of their own.

• Quilting for Kids: Crazy Log Cabin Pillow, 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4, local seamstress Lisa Sikora teaches children to use sewing machines while making a quilted pillow.

• Beginning Watercolor Painting and Pastel Landscapes, 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18; local painter Lyric Ozburn teaches basic techniques for both adults and older children.

• Woodcut Printing For Children: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 25; children 8 and up can cut their own blocks and print their own pieces with Lyric Ozburn.

• "What Color is the Wind: New Paintings by Lyric Ozburn and Barbara Beckman" Art Reception, 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 30. Meet the artists, enjoy refreshments and listen to live music at this lively party celebrating new works by local painters.

River Valley also plays host to monthly meetings of local artists guilds. Quilters' Project and PotLuck Day is from 5 to 7 p.m. May 7 (the first Wednesday of the month). YARNS Ewenited spinning and fiber arts group meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, May 14 and 28, from 5 to 8 p.m.. All are welcome to drop in to both groups.

In June, River Valley will host The Driftless Area Painters Guild Show: "Art in the Parks" which features paintings of various Wisconsin state park views.
