MONROE - On April 19, 300 high school students from Albany, Argyle, Brodhead, Monticello, New Glarus and Juda participated in the "Passport to Reality" program sponsored by the Green County United Prevention Professionals for Youth (G.U.P.P.Y) in Monroe High School's practice gym.
"Passport to Reality" shows youth the dangers of potentially risky and dangerous situations they may encounter throughout their middle and high school years. Event participants receive an envelope with five colored cards, that begin their pre-determined life scenario. Youth simulate events that involve topics relating to drug, alcohol and tobacco issues; dating and relationships; and the financial consequences of poor decisions. The goal of the game is to encourage positive choices in the students' real-life futures. Volunteers from the Green County area help the students learn more about the importance of positive choices and the many resources available in the community to support them.
GUPPY has worked since 2006 to put together a hands-on program that incorporates almost 100 local professionals on hand to help play the parts of the event stations. This was the fourth event put on by the coalition group and many neighboring counties have since implemented similar programs to reach out to youth in their communities as well.
The next event will take place in April 2013
