In the morning hours of Dec. 25, 2022, a “sun dog” pattern halo surrounded the sun with a rainbow tint thanks to blowing snow particles high in the atmosphere. The halo is an optical phenomenon that is produced by ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere reflecting light from either the sun or moon. Christmas Day was blustery with sub-zero wind chills, much like the previous few days, but the morning sun added a symbolic festive feel to the holiday with it’s perfectly timed rainbow refractions.
