MONROE - What do a small bakery business and karate lessons have to do with traditional children's literature? The answer can be found at the Monroe Public Library when the MPL Puppet Players put on the first Puppets and Popcorn show of the season. Area families are invited to join the library puppets as the teen Puppet Players troupe presents "Little Red Stories" at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the library's meeting room. The program is free and no reservations are required.
"Little Red Stories" will include two favorite children's tales, "The Little Red Hen" and "Little Red Riding Hood" However, this puppet show will offer a new twist. The audience will have an active part in the puppet play, helping to tell the stories and voting to choose how each tale will end.
The show begins with Grandpa and Ben settling down to share bedtime stories. Ben doesn't like the story Grandpa chooses and says "The Little Red Hen" is for babies. Grandpa convinces Ben that he will enjoy the story because he can help tell it and then asks the audience to join in, too.
Is "Little Red Riding Hood" too scary for a bedtime story? Not the way Grandpa reads this version. Children will laugh out loud when The Big Bad Wolf gets the surprise of his life when he tangles with Granny in the Puppet Players presentation.
As each story nears its end, Grandpa asks Ben and the audience to choose the ending and vote for the classic conclusion or Grandpa's fantastic finale.
Family Evening at the Library programs are a time for families to take a short break, laugh together, and check out a few books to share at home. This is the 12th year the series of hands-on workshops, puppet shows, and other programs of interest to families has been held at the Monroe Public Library.
