BRODHEAD - Three Green County men won awards for public safety Saturday, April 30, at the Spring Conference of the American Legion's Third District of Wisconsin.
Trevor J. Long was awarded the Edward J. Ornsby Law and Order Award, Wayne L. Gibson was awarded the Firefighter Award and Chris S. Searles was awarded the Emergency Medical Technician Award. All three awards were presented by Commander of the Third District Ken Rynes, Jr. at the general session. The Third District encompasses Crawford, Dane, Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette and Richland counties.
Long has been in police work for seven years, and he is currently an investigator and police officer of the Brodhead Police Department. In addition to his regular duties, Long is the Officer in Charge of the Brodhead Police Department Community Services Officers (CSO), which maintains the Brodhead Emergency Monitoring System. He is also an active volunteer for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Green County, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Green and Rock County Wisconsin Sexual Assault and Recovery programs.
Gibson has served the Brodhead Volunteer Fire Department for more than 40 years, rising through the leadership positions from lieutenant, captain and now 1st assistant chief. He is directly responsible for assisting the fire chief in leading and managing 32 firefighters. Gibson has also been active with the Lions Clubs for more than 20 years and was awarded the Melvin Jones award, which is the Lions Club's highest community service award.
Searles has been an EMT for more than 35 years, having followed the footsteps of his parents who were both EMTs. In addition to being a certified EMT in Wisconsin, he is certified as a Fire Fighter 1 and Fire Fighter 2 in Wisconsin and has served as a Brodhead volunteer firefighter for more than 33 years. Searles is also the founding member of the on-call Brodhead Area Emergency Medical Services and has served on its board of directors since 1989.
Long, Gibson and Searles are now in the running for the State of Wisconsin awards, which will be given at the July Department Convention in Appleton.
