MONROE - The Green County Association for Home and Community Education (HCE) held its annual cultural arts competition and international program recently at the Justice Center.

Thirteen HCE members entered items, including photography, textile projects, wood and cement items. Projects were judged during the afternoon. Green County HCE members who entered items were: Joyce Anderson, Beth Campbell, Norma Bader, Ursula Meier, Kristi Leonard, Mary Ann Krebs, Joyce Moen, Kris Winkler, Kathy Weaver, Nancy Signer, Andrea Byerley, Lynn Lokken and Viola White.

Seven items were chosen to represent Green County HCE at the state HCE conference in September. Members who had state qualifying items were: Weaver, Lokken, White, Signer and Krebs. White's baptismal gown won the "People's Choice Award" in the crocheting, wearable item category.

A bonus category, "Red, White, and Blue On A Shoe," was included this year in the competition, to spotlight the state conference being held near the state capitol. Campbell had the winning entry, which will be on display at the conference.

Home and Community Education Association members, family and friends gathered to hear HCE member Tamara Schulte give the evening international program keynote speaker. Schulte and other area education students traveled last fall and winter to student teach in Cuenca, Ecuador for eight weeks. While in Ecuador, Schulte worked with fifth- and seventh-grade students in teaching reading and language as well as working with children with special needs two hours per day.

Green County HCE is part of a statewide organization of approximately 7,000 members in 59 counties.
