Professional woodcarver coming to Turner Hall

MONROE - The Turner Hall of Monroe welcomes professional woodcarver, Wayne Barton, Chicago, to speak as part of its 2008 Swiss Heritage Series at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, the Grand Hall. Although versed in all disciplines of carving, Barton specializes in chip carving and has devoted more than 30 years to its advancement. He is recognized as the driving force behind the renaissance chip carving is enjoying in the United States.

Trained in Brienz, the woodcarving center of Switzerland, and named Woodcarver of the Year in the United States in 2005, Barton is the author of seven best-selling books on chip carving published in six countries. He has also developed and pioneered the most popular chip carving knives and ceramic sharpening stones used today.

Barton's work has been recognized in special exhibition at the Swiss National Museum in Zürich and can be found in private collections all over the world. He is also a visiting artist/lecturer at the Chicago Art Institute and founder of the Alpine School of Woodcarving, Ltd., the oldest establishment in North America dedicated to the education, teaching and encouragement of chip carving.
