Presentation explores the history of cheesemaking in the Argyle area

ARGYLE — Historic Argyle will host a special presentation titled “The History of Cheesemaking in the Argyle Area” on Sunday, March 15. The event will take place at The Legacy of Argyle, located downtown at the corner of East Milwaukee and State Street.

Admission is a free-will donation. Doors will open at  1 p.m., and the presentation will begin at 1:30 p.m. The program will conclude at approximately 3 p.m.

The presentation will be led by Paul Vassalotti, a Wisconsin cheesemaking historian from Cross Plains. Vassalotti has researched Wisconsin cheese factories and cheesemaking history since 2019, focusing on southern Wisconsin, including Dane, Lafayette, Green, eastern Iowa, Grant, Richland, and Dodge counties. His personal research interest centers on the history of Italian cheesemaking in Wisconsin.

In addition to the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to sample a variety of cheeses from local cheese factories. A cash bar will be available.

Prior to his work on cheesemaking history, Vassalotti researched the history of Wisconsin dairies that delivered milk to homes and published a book documenting known dairies and their milk bottles. He also maintains a large collection of historic Wisconsin milk bottles.

This event offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the region’s rich dairy heritage and the people and traditions that helped shape Wisconsin’s identity as America’s Dairyland.
