Post office encouraging military mailings

MONROE - It's been about six months since the holidays and the last major mailing to the men and women serving our country overseas.

A lull in the number of care packages being sent has spearheaded a summertime United States Postal Service initiative called Operation: Season's Greetings - Without the Snow! This promotion partners the Postal Service and the USO, and is meant to boost the morale of the men and women serving overseas.

The Monroe Post Office received a supply of Mili-Kits and will be distributing them free to local customers, as well as groups and organizations. The kits are designed specifically for military families sending packages overseas. Each kit includes six Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes in a variety of sizes, six Priority Mail labels, one roll of Priority Mail tape and six customs forms with envelopes. The mailing kits can be ordered by calling (800) 610-8734, option 1, and follow the prompts.

Anyone bringing a Mili-Kit Priority Mail Flat rate package (or any other Priority Flat Rate Box) addressed to an APO/FPO on a scheduled "Snow Day" will be able to affix the official "Season's Greetings - Without the Snow!" seal to their package. The "Snow Days" for the Monroe Post Office are Wednesdays, July 8 and July 15. Service organizations overseas will watch for packages bearing the seal and directing them to Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula service men and women. The seals will only be affixed on "Snow Days" at the time of mailing.

Operations: Season's Greetings - Without the Snow! only runs through July 31.

"Care packages from home are a big morale boost for military service members stationed around the world," said Eugene Naumann. "With Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes, you can lift spirits without weighing yourself down. If it fits, it ships for one low price."

Flat Rate Boxes are free, and can be obtained at the Monroe Post Office, or ordered online at www.usps.com. The Postal Service offers a discount for mailing the largest Priority Mail Flat Rate Box. The domestic price for mailing the Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box, is $13.95, but for packages to U.S. military addresses overseas, the price is reduced to $11.95.
