The Green County Forestry Education Center, W6037 County P, is located in an old schoolhouse south of Monroe and was founded in 1968 by Albert and Marion Deppeler to help educate local communities about small woodlands and natural resources. Numbered samples of different species of wood and other natural items can be found at the center. (Photo supplied)
MONROE - A chapter of the Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association will host a summer picnic at 11 a.m. June 18 at the Green County Forestry Education Center, W6037 County P, Monroe, just west of Clarno.

The picnic will include food and an opportunity to meet others with an interest in natural resources and woodlands. Brats, hot dogs, coffee and lemonade will be provided by the Black Hawk chapter. Attendees should bring place settings, any other drinks preferred and a dish to pass (appetizer, side or dessert). After the meal will be a presentation on the history and uses of the Green County Forestry Education Center, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity. The property also has walking trails.

The Green County Forestry Education Center started out as a schoolhouse, which was purchased by Albert and Marion Deppeler to re-purpose into a forestry education center to educate the local community about woodlands. The Deppelers were lifetime WWOA members, both named Wisconsin and Regional Tree Farmers of the Year and earned runner-up for national honors. The Center is now used by school groups, scout groups, FFA and others in the area.

The Black Hawk chapter of WWOA covers Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Green, Jefferson and Rock counties. WWOA and its 10 chapters work together to provide opportunities for woodland owners to get to know and learn from each other and from natural resource professionals through field days, meetings and conferences. Visit WWOA's website at wisconsinwoodlands.org to find a calendar of events.

The picnic is free to attend, but donations will be accepted at the door to help cover costs. RSVP by June 10 by sending an email to bhc.wwoa@gmail.com or calling 608-437-5048.
