MONROE - The Literacy Council of Green County, Ltd will celebrate Literacy Awareness Day by recognizing their tutors and learners and promoting literacy for all. Supported by Verizon's "Check Into Literacy" program and Wisconsin Literacy, the Literacy Council of Green County Ltd. will have a family picnic at the Monroe United Methodist Church on Sunday, Sept. 20.

This year, International Literacy Day will put the spotlight on the empowering role of literacy and its importance for participation, citizenship and social development. Literacy and Empowerment is the theme for the 2009-2010 biennium of the United Nations Literacy Decade.
Sept. 8 was the kick-off of Wisconsin Literacy's statewide 1200 Tutors in 12 Weeks campaign to recruit new volunteer tutors in an effort to help meet the rising demand for adult literacy services. The Literacy Council of Green County Ltd. is a member of Wisconsin Literacy and is recruiting tutors locally.
