MONROE - The Parks and Recreation Department has trees available for the Spring Terrace Tree Planting Program.

All orders must be placed with the Parks and Recreation Department by Friday, April 8.

If you are interested in having a tree planted on the terrace, and if there are overheard wires, we have several varieties to choose from:

n Cleveland Select Pear is an ornamental pear. It's a conical shaped, one of the hardier Callery Pears.

The foliage is dark, glossy-green that turns brilliant red and purple in the fall. Floriferous-white flowers also grow. This tree grows to about 25 to 30 feet high.

n Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac is a budded tree form.

This tree is a sturdy compact habit. This selection will flower, at an early age, a white flower plumes 10 to 12 inches long. There must have a well-drained site and no high nitrogen fertilizer. This tree grows between 15 to 25 feet high.

n Satisfaction Maple is a smaller scale maple with an impressive growth rate.

The height will get about 25 to 30' tall and slightly less in spread. There are smaller, finer textured leaves than Norway maple types. Green leaves color late in the season to a mix of purple, red-orange and green. Fall color is best when cool temperatures come on long and slow.

This is a nice compact selection for smaller landscapes or street tree planting. This tree grows to about 20 to 25 feet high.

n Sienna Glen Maple is a hybrid maple with upright pyramidal growth. This tree is a vigorous grower with fall colors being a mix of yellow, orange and red. These trees grow to around 50 feet.

n Emerald Lustre Maple is similar to the Emerald Queen, but more vigorous and a better branching habit. The foliage is a glossy green with red tips on new growth and turns yellow fall in the fall. This tree grows to 50-60 feet tall.

n Skyline Honey Locust is the most popular of the honey locust.

It's upright, spreading branch angles give it a distinctive pyramidal form. Develops a strong sturdy trunk.

This type of tree is excellent for use where filtered shade is desired. The foliage turns yellow in the fall. The tree is seedless and will grow to about 45 feet.

n White Oak is a rugged oak and grows well in either upland or swampy areas.

The leaves are dark-green above and felty-white underneath, changing to yellow-brown to reddish in the fall. A rounded open tends to habit. The White Oak grows to 50 feet tall.

The trees listed above are for terrace planting only. Trees purchased through this program will be planted by the Monroe Parks Department.

We will stake the desired location and contact Digger's Hotline prior to planting. At the time of planting, we will mulch, water, fertilize and stake the tree and leave care instructions with the homeowner.

The trees are guaranteed for one year.

If you are interested in purchasing one or more of these trees please contact the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department at (608) 329-2460 to place your order.

Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

We also have voice mail for after-hour service. When you pay for the trees, you will receive a flag to be placed in the general area you would prefer the tree be planted.

Digger's Hotline will be called the week of April 11, with flags being staked by this deadline, and planting is scheduled to begin the week of April 25.
