Parks and Rec sessions available

MONROE - Monroe Parks and Recreation has the following sessions available:



Karate

Karate began Tuesday and continues through Feb. 16. It meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Behring Senior Center. It covers basics, forms, self-defense and sparring. Youth (7 to 12 years old) meet from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. and adults (13 and older) meet from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $45 with $5 off for each additional family member. The instructor is Timm Burns. Participants should wear loose clothes and bring a water bottle.



Munchkin Mondays

Munchkin Mondays is for children 21â"2 to 5 years old. The class meets from 9 to 11 a.m. once a month on Mondays. Dates and themes are: Dec. 12, Christmas Kids; Jan 9, Olaf's birthday; Feb. 6, Be My Munchkin. The program involves arts and crafts, games, stories and free time to enhance listening skills, group play and making new friends. The cost is $10 per Monday.



Wresting with the Cheesemakers

Students in kindergarten through eighth grade can learn wrestling techniques, moves and drills. High school wrestlers will be working with participants. Bring a pair of gym shoes and comfortable clothing. Everyone will receive a Campion's Champion T-shirt sponsored by the Breadon Family in memory of their son Gavin. The program will be from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Monroe High School balcony. Participants will be able to ride a bus from Parkside, Northside, St. Victor and the middle school to the high school. Abraham Lincoln participants will be able to walk to the high school. The cost is $10.



Youth Basketball Drills and Skills Camp

Note: The program location has changed: All groups will be at the high school in the practice gym. The camp will be coached by the MHS boys and girls basketball players and Matt Skibba, recreation supervisor. Youth basketball is open to girls and boys in second through sixth grade. Children will be separated by age into two divisions. The program will be held on early dismissal Mondays at the MHS practice gym from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Jan 16 to Feb. 20. There will be no basketball on Jan. 23. All participants will be able to ride a bus from Parkside, Northside, St. Victor and middle School to the high school. Participants will also receive a pass that will allow them to attend a MHS home basketball game. The cost is $30 for residents and $40 for nonresidents and players will receive a program T-shirt.



Basketball with the Cheesemakers

Students in kindergarten through eighth grade can shoot hoops with the Cheesemaker boys and girls basketball teams. Everyone will receive a Campion's Champion T-shirt. The program will meeting from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Jan. 9 at the MHS practice gym. Participants will be able to ride a bus from Parkside, Northside, St. Victor and middle school to the high school. Abraham Lincoln participants will be able to walk to the high school. The cost is $10.



Soccer Open Gym

Abraham Lincoln School gym will be open from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for skills, drills and playing games. Open gym is supervised by Curt Zastrow and is for middle and high school students. The program runs until March 2 and participants can join at any time. The cost is $20.



Winter Dance

Winter dance classes will run from Feb. 13 to March 27. Classes are held at the Behring Senior Center and are limited to 12 students. Registrations are accepted on first come, first served basis. The cost is $40 for residents and $50 for nonresidents. Ballet I (3 and 4 years old) is 5:15 to 5:45 p.m.; Ballet II (4 and 5 years old) is 5:50 to 6:20 p.m.; Ballet III (5 and 8 years old with at least one dance class with Kathryn Zastrow) is 6:25 to 6:55 p.m. Ballet IV (7 and up with instructor approval) is 7 to 7:35 p.m. The pop class (7 and up) is 7:40 to 8:10 p.m.
