Parks and Rec offering afterschool, self defense and tennis programs

MONROE - Monroe Parks and Recreation is still accepting participants for its after-school program this fall. A one-day deposit is needed to hold a spot in the program. The first session runs from Sept. 1 to Dec. 22, and the second session runs from Jan. 2 to May 18. The program is open to children entering kindergarten to fifth grade, with the Youth Center open from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

From 3:30 to 4 p.m., kids will work on homework and enjoy a snack; from 4 to 5 p.m., there will be a fun, structured activity. Those interested can register at the Monroe Parks and Recreation office.

A Self Defense and Safety Awareness class is also available. The one-day, crash course, which will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, will teach participants to stay safe by learning self- defense techniques with an emphasis on safety awareness. Participants will learn how to successfully think about self defense situations and defend themselves through practical self-defense and Karate-type techniques. There must be six participants for the class to proceed, so those interested are urged to visit Monroe Parks and Recreation office.

There are also still openings for the Monroe Parks and Recreation tennis camps. The camps run Monday through Thursday for three hours. Packed with tennis fundamentals, the camps are geared toward players of all levels and abilities.

Each day, there will be a specific focus on certain skills through drill and a few games too. The coed/mid hi tennis camp will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 1 to 4. The high school girls tennis camp will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 1 to 4.

The boys tennis camp (for boys entering eighth to 12th grade) will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 25 to 28. All camps cost $30 for residents and $40 for non-residents.

To register, stop down at the Monroe Parks and Recreation office. There are also still openings for hour-long tennis lessons, which are ongoing and run until July 29.
