EDGERTON - The 53rd annual Rock River Thresheree will be Sept. 4-7, midway between Janesville and Edgerton along Wisconsin 51 and County M. Featured this year are oddball and orphan tractors and engines, including high crop and orchard tractors, and a flea market with antiques, crafts and collectibles. The showgrounds open at 8 a.m. each day, with breakfast available. Watch steam engines, tractors, equipment and antique farm machinery parade though the natural amphitheater during the daily 3 p.m. "Parade of Power." Most activities run until 5 p.m.
Watch demonstrations of grain threshing using antique threshing machines or plowing with both steam and gas powered tractors using a 12-bottom gangplow or corn harvesting or cutting and shocking grain. A favorite demonstration is the pile driver. This is one of the last known steam operated drivers still in operation, driving 18" diameter logs into the ground. Watch sorghum syrup being made or take a ride on the steam-powered locomotive, The Rock River Cannonball. Check out the Museum of industry and Agriculture which houses a collection of large stationary steam engines that run during the day including the Worthington Diesel and a large collection of Fairbanks-Morse diesel engines. The building is home to a steam calliope too. Stop next door and see the Rock River IornWerks which features a working machine shop of a by-gone era.
An early 1900's Blacksmith shop shows off the skills of some of the best blacksmiths left in the state all day long. Additionally, the crafts of the wheelwright and woodwrights are presented. A steam-powered sawmill is in operation through out the day, turning logs into lumber. There is also see a shingle mill cut cedar shingles.
There will be classic construction equipment used and displayed on the grounds. Antique and classic cars and trucks and numerous hand built scale models are on display.
Children's activities include pedal pulls at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. There are classes up to 100 pounds, and prizes for the winners. New for this year is a corn box to play in, similar to a sandbox, but filled with corn. Winding and weaving along the road is the barrel train, a fun ride. We are also offering children the chance to drive their first tractor at the show, along with a tractor rodeo.
Foods that suit everyone's taste are located around the park. While having a bite to eat, listen to some good music from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Take home some fresh ground corn meal and buckwheat, available in the Gristmill.
There is ample free parking, with shuttle service provided to take you to the center of the activities or tour the ground with the in-park shuttle. Church services are held Sunday morning.
Plan to spend the day and enjoy the activities for only $6 for adults and $1 for children 6-12. Children under 6 are free. Receive $1 off adult admission with non-perishable food donation. Friday is seniors' day, $5 admission for all seniors. Camping is available to exhibitors.
