MONROE - It's been said that cats and dogs leave lasting paw prints on our hearts. The Green County Humane Society has a new logo that reflects the importance of companion animals in our lives and in our hearts.

Katelyn O'Brien, New Glarus, designed the winning logo as part of a GCHS logo design contest for area art students. The society will begin using the new logo immediately.

O'Brien said her design reflects what is important about GCHS.

"I like simplicity, and I felt that a large dog paw print would serve well as the central shape. Within the four toe pads of the dog's paw, I placed the initials of the organization. In the remaining space of the dog's paw there is a white house, representing a welcoming area of shelter," she said.

"I then chose to place a cat's paw in the middle to include animals commonly found at the Green County Humane Society. To top it off, I believed the green was a warm welcoming color reflecting the shelter's spirit towards its animals," she said.

The logo is just what GCHS was looking for, said Heidi Treuthardt, GCHS secretary and logo contest organizer. "The logo is simple, but stylish," Treuthardt said. "It gives us an immediately recognizable presence. We are very happy with how Katelyn captured what we're all about."

It's also a very workable logo. Tina White, a professional graphic artist in Monroe, reviewed O'Brien's work and was impressed. Her design is easy to reproduce, easy to read and recognizable, all important factors in a successful logo, White said.

O'Brien, 18, is a freshman at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where she is majoring in fine arts with an emphasis in graphic design. She is considering either a minor or a double major in business. She plans to become a graphic designer and work her way to a supervisor or vice president position of a graphic design organization or team.

She graduated from New Glarus High School in May. Her interests are drawing, photography, playing sports such as basketball and soccer, coaching basketball, running, listening to music and spending time with family and friends. Her parents are Thomas and Shelly O'Brien of New Glarus.

GCHS operates a no-kill shelter at 1500 6 1/2 Ave. in Monroe. Hours of operation are from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. It is closed Monday, Wednesday and holidays. For more information, call the shelter at 325-9600.
