Toffler's Pub & Grill

NEW GLARUS — After nearly two decades in charge, Toffler’s Pub & Grill owners Steve Longo and Christy Hunter are handing over the baton. Last Wednesday, at the bar for the kickoff party of Corrine Hendrickson’s state senate campaign, Longo made the announcement.

The owners purchased the building, located at 200 5th Avenue in downtown New Glarus, in May 2006. The structure was built in 1880 as a hotel and saloon by Swiss immigrant Ernest Thierstein, who also used it as a boarding house for Swiss workers. It later was known as Four Corners Hotel and Schindler’s Hotel, though locals often refer to as the “Four Corners” building.

The pub’s last day in business as Toffler’s will be Tuesday, Sept. 30.

New owners, brother and sister Donald Nahale and Deeann Nahale-Thomas, plan to reopen “Ohana’s Kitchen” on Oct. 16 as a restaurant. Longo said the Nahale’s are Hawaiian, and in the Hawaiian language, Ohana means family.
