New Glarus High School's Mock Trial team made an impressive showing at the Regional Competition on February 7 at the Rock County Courthouse in Janesville. Fourteen students from New Glarus demonstrated their courtroom skills by presenting the hypothetical case of Jones, et al. v. Badger Aeromechanical Corporation for trial before attorneys and judges at Saturday's tournament.

Last fall, the Mock Trial team was given case materials including a Complaint, Jury Instructions, witness affidavits, expert reports, charts and maps. The students devoted countless hours developing and analyzing factual and legal arguments relevant to the plaintiffs and defendant. Jones, et al. v. Badger Aeromechanical Corp. was a complex "toxic tort" case in which the Jones family alleged negligence, nuisance and trespass against fictitious Badger Aeromechanical, a corporation charged with the improper use and disposal of hazardous waste in connection with manufacturing mini-mills and wind turbines.

Attorneys Natalie Morgan, Julia Gartzke, David Gartzke, Katie Barr, Carl Pratt, Elizabeth Brunner, Markus Nevil and Zach Clark demonstrated courtroom prowess and devoted countless hours to preparing legal strategies, devising opening and closing statements, direct and cross-examination outlines and learning the Federal Rules of Evidence.

Witnesses Evan Riniker, Alex Atwell, Victoria Troxler, Kari Yaun, Jessica Pratt and Cecelia Ford exhibited poise and intelligence while memorizing case facts, expert reports and developing meaningful and persuasive testimony.

Each year, the State Bar of Wisconsin's Law-related Education Committee creates a hypothetical case for the Mock Trial Program. Participating students develop analytical skills and knowledge of the judicial system. Becky Fredericks (teacher coach), Dan Gartzke (attorney coach) and Faun Phillipson (attorney coach) extend thanks to the Mock Trial team of 2008-09, their families, Green County Bar Association, Judge James Beer, Green County Clerk of Court Mike Doyle, the memory of late Rodney O. Kittelsen and the New Glarus School District.
