NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus School District scored high in Battle of the Books.
Battle of the Books is a competition that encourages quality reading, team collaboration and friendly competition. Students, working in teams of four, read 20 books and answer questions in the form: "In which book __________?" where the response is a title and author. The 20 books span a wide range of genres, from mysteries to non-fiction to fantasies to picture books. There were 73 New Glarus students who participated, from third to 10th grade, plus 30 teachers who read along with the students.
Local competitions identified the champions for the junior division (grades three through five), the middle school division (grades six through eight) and the high school division (grades nine through 12).
The junior division started with a Sweet 16, the middle division started with a Final Eight, and there were two student teams in the high school division. Teacher teams competed against the top two teams in each division.
The champions for each division competed in a statewide online competition. For the junior division, Ellie Eichielkraut, Georgia Jones, Riley O'Flanagan and Sydney O'Flanagan competed and earned third in a field of the 209 teams registered.
At the middle school division, Robbie Chenoweth, Jeremy Kolasa, Reis Weeden and Matthew Zierl competed in their second statewide championship. They also competed as fifth-graders in 2013. They scored 18 of 134 Wisconsin middle schools.
Margo Diener, Katie Dunham, Kailey Hermanson and Maria Thurow represented New Glarus High School in the senior division competition. This is the third year that this team has competed together. They were 19 among the 76 high schools competing.
The students worked hard to prepare for the competition. The training included reading a variety of books, paying attention to detail, memorizing titles and authors and learning to work together.
The Wisconsin Battle of the Books is sponsored by the Wisconsin Educational Media and Technology Association.
