NEW GLARUS — In recognition of a milestone year for New Glarus as the village celebrates 175 years, a wide range of commemorative activities will be held throughout 2020, as local groups and organizations showcase their own special contributions.
Historic tours, talks, special events, movie screenings and more will be open to the public. The weekend of July 30 to Aug. 2 will offer fireworks, parade, music and community picnic, alongside the well-loved New Glarus Firefest, Alphornman Triathlon and Swiss Volksfest.
New Glarus was founded when Swiss authorities established the Glarus Emigration Society in 1844, offering loans for land purchases in America. There were 193 volunteers who participated in the program and made the decision to start fresh in the new world.
Land in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri was considered, but the group’s scouts settled on two square miles along the Little Sugar River in the Wisconsin Territory. About 1,200 acres were purchased for $1.25 per acre. The pioneer families traveled from Switzerland to Baltimore, Maryland, enduring a 49-day sea voyage. The settlers arrived in their new home on Aug. 15, 1845 after traveling for over four months.
New Glarus began farming wheat, but quickly moved into dairy farming and cheesemaking, which the region is still famous for today. The Village of New Glarus is a popular tourist destination, boasting beautiful alpine architecture, a thriving downtown shopping scene, Swiss cuisine, wineries, New Glarus Brewing Company and popular festivals taking place throughout the year.
