MONROE — Monroe Theatre Guild prepares to bring an uplifting message to audiences with their newest production, “Right Before I Go” as part of the Colony Brands performance series. A

cclaimed screenwriter and playwright, Stan Zimmerman (The Golden Girls, Roseanne, Gilmore Girls), brings to life the last words written in letters by individuals lost to suicide — including celebrities, veterans, kids that were bullied, LGBTQ, and the clinically depressed — and by those who have survived suicide attempts. This meaningful play is directed for MTG by longtime mental health advocate, Jeff Ditzenberger, and producer Denise Plantenberg.

Based on the author’s navigation of his friend Kevin’s death by suicide, the narrator tries to understand the pain of depression experienced by those lost to suicide in the letters they left behind. He also shares stories of renewed hope by others who found a reason to live again; sending a message to “break the silence” and end the shame so often associated with depression and suicide. Broadway World said, “This poignant, deeply moving, and surprisingly light play invokes a raw and authentic approach to storytelling in an effort to help broaden public perspective of suicide, eliminate the stigma associated with depression, and strengthen the relationship between survivors and those struggling every day.”

Each performance will be followed by a “Talk Back”, a time when members of the audience can ask questions or share thoughts. Mental health professionals are invited to attend each performance and to participate in follow up discussions. Area non-profit organizations that support suicide prevention and mental wellbeing will also have a presence at performances. A portion of the net profits from “Right Before I Go” will be donated to non-profit organizations that focus on mental health. Take note, this production contains mature content and strong language. Parental guidance is recommended and youth under 13 years of age should only attend with a parent or a responsible adult.

Four performances will take place on MTG’s Colony Brands Stage June 9, 10, 11 at 7 p.m. and June 12 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase now online at monroetheatre.com, at the Monroe Arts Center during regular business hours or by calling (608) 325-1111.
