MTG plans summer art, theater classes

MONROE - The Monroe Theatre Guild (MTG) features art classes for adults and art and theatre opportunities for kids as part of its summer class lineup.

For adults, the popular acrylic "masterpiece" classes taught by Suzanne Miller offer two opportunities to create a painting in a day. In "Masterpiece in an Evening" - to be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday July 11 - artists will create a beautiful pop-out painting of a summer meadow with flowers, fences, birdhouses and butterflies. The cost is $20 for MTG members and $23 for non-MTG members.

"Masterpiece in a Morning" will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. The class is "down on the farm," with a scene of rolling farmland, barns, fences and cows. Cost is $23 for MTG members and $26 for non-MTG members. Adult classes are for those ages 15 and up, and no prior art experience is necessary.

There are also painting classes available for young artists. All painting classes are taught by resident artist Suzanne Miller. For kids age 5 to 7, "Beginners Acrylic Painting" will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 11.

Young painters will learn mixing and blending colors and the uses of different kinds of brushes to create a landscape and a still life floral painting. Cost for the class is $11 for MTG members and $14 for non-MTG members.

For ages 8 to 10, "Painting on Canvas" will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, July 18. The class lets students experience blending and mixing paint on canvas board and stretched canvas. The cost, which is $17 for MTG members and $20 for non-MTG members, includes all canvas and supplies.

Back by popular demand, "How to Paint Your Dragon" - for ages 10 to 14 - will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9. Children will learn techniques in drawing with a brush, blending paint and using fun metallics to make scales.

Cost is $15 for MTG members and $18 for non-MTG members. Advanced Dragon Painting (also for ages 10 to 14 is also available. Kids will take dragon painting to the next level and add in some otherworldly landscapes and more. This class will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 9. Cost for the class is $18 for MTG members and $21 for non-MTG members.

Daring to Doodle will offer students the chance to take basic scribbles and create creatures, landscapes or anything else that they can imagine. After drawing images with marker, students will experiment with various media to make their creations come alive. This class, which will be held Saturday, July 23, will be offered for two ages groups. Ages 6 to 9 will meet from 9 to 11 a.m., and ages 10 to 14 will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost of the class is $14 for MTG members and $16 for non-MTG members. The instructor is Nikki Cooper.

For those with an interest in sewing, "The Monster Under My Bed" for ages 6 to 9 will meet from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 26 or 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday July 30. Students will learn to sew simple stitches, buttons and embellishments while using their imagination to create a monster pillow.

For the 10 - 14 age group, "Monster Building" is a similar class but teaches older students to use basic hand stitching to sew their own pillow and embellish with stitches, buttons, and trims. Sewing classes are taught by Nikki Cooper. Classes are $14 for MTG members and $16 for non-MTG members.

"Theatre Kids," for ages 8 to 15, students can participate in the summer's youth production, "Greek Out." The three-week production, directed by Mary Harris, will be a show of myth, music and mayhem. Using a mash-up of musical songs and styles, kids will help develop scenes from Greek Mythology using characterization, acting, movement, rhythm and expression. Rehearsals will begin the week of July 5 and continue three times per week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The class will culminate in two performances on Friday, July 22 at 5 and 7 p.m. at the new MTG Theatre. Participants do not have to audition to be a part of the production. Everyone will have lines (unless they choose not to) and participate in some big choral numbers. Some vocal solos will also be available for interested participants who wish to audition. The purpose of the production is to give kids of all performance levels a great theatrical experience. In addition to stage work and rehearsal, kids will also help build props and paint scenery to get a taste of behind the scenes. Cost is $65 for MTG members and $75 for non -MTG members.

Summer Arts Camp will be a week of theatre, art, music and more, to be held from August 15 to 19. The day camp will culminate in an exhibition evening on Friday, August 19, where kids will showcase their performance skills and exhibit art pieces created during the week. Arts camp is for kids ages 5 to 14.

Junior Camp, for the 5 to 7 age group, will be a half-day camp from 9 a.m. to noon. Junior Camp provides a fun, action-packed morning where kids will experience a wide variety of art in all of its forms: acting, movement, voice, costume fun, puppetry, singing, action songs, rhythm instruments, painting, drawing and sculpture. For kids ages 8 to 14, there will be a choice of half-day morning camp (9 a.m. to noon), half-day afternoon camp, (12:30 to 3:30 p.m.), or a full-day camp (9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). Students in the two older age groups will get to choose from a wide variety of classes pertaining to many different forms of art. Both the morning session and the afternoon session will have 3 classes each. Classes offered include acting, voice and body movement, characterization, the art of comedy, puppetry, masks, theatre short performance, reader's theatre, technical theatre, costuming, props, makeup, sound & lights, drawing, cartooning, painting, sculpture, exploring famous artists, and more.

Fees for half-day camps are $90 for members and $100 for non-MTG Members, and for full-day camps are $170 for members and $190 for non-MTG members.
