Monticello Homecoming starts next week

MONTICELLO - Monticello Homecoming will be held Thursday, July 10 through Sunday, July 13. Monticello Community Club announced the activities for the event, beginning with softball tournaments starting July 10 and continuing throughout the weekend.

Softball tournaments will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, if enough teams have entered, and will continue all weekend. To register or for more information, call 608-426-4955.

A children's carnival will be held all weekend. Wristband night is Friday from 6 to 10 p.m.

The Lioness' will have their food stand open all weekend, beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. The menu includes brats, hot dogs, barbecue and homemade pies, donated by community members. Pie flavors change daily. In addition, the Lion's Club will be serving homemade cheese curds and mushrooms all weekend. The Boy Scouts, the Booster Club and other local organizations will also be on the grounds with food. During the softball tournament, the Friends of the Library will be providing munchies.

The FFA and FFA Alumni will be serving at the Fish Boil at the Octagon Shelter on Friday. Dinners begin at 5 p.m. In case of rain, the fish will be served at the Legion Building. The fish boil will include boiled potatoes, onions and fish. Prices are $9 in advance for an adult dinner and $11 at the door or $6 for child's portion.

The Homecoming Variety Show will showcase local talent in a variety show format at 7 p.m. Friday at Barnaby's Monticello House.

Diesel Dan will be performing from 8 p.m. to midnight at the main beer stand. There is no admission charge.

Mud volleyball, grass volleyball and three-on-three basketball will be going on all day Saturday. Those who want to participate need to sign up and pay by Tuesday, July 8 at the village hall. At 9:30 a.m. Saturday, those who are interested in signing up for Monticello Homecoming Ride Registration can at the Boars Nest. The ride leaves at 11 a.m.

The free Kids' Pedal Tractor Pull will be held Saturday. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. in front of Monticello Pool House on W. Monroe Street. The pull is for ages 3 through 10 with four age classes, free T-shirts for all and trophies. For more information and to pre-register for a T-shirt, call 608-938-1207.

The Tug-O-War tournaments will begin at noon Saturday.

Canoe races will be held around Lake Montesian. Registration will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the lake. Races will begin at 2 p.m. Teams will consist of seniors over 55; adult males 17 and older; adult females 17 and older; co-ed and children, at least 12 years. There is no fee to enter. Monticello Community Club is sponsoring the prizes. The triathlon and relay race will follow. The team divisions are the same as the canoe races.

Area firefighter water fights will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday by the pool on W. North Avenue.

From 1 to 5 p.m. at the main beer tent, the Greenfield Brothers will be entertaining.

At 6 p.m. in fellowship hall at the Zwingli Church, Jim Sulzer will be talking about "Adventures in Dairyland: Chasing stray voltage, one electron at a time."

At the beer stand from 8 p.m. to noon, JD and Boys will perform. Fireworks will be held a 9:45 p.m. at Lake Montesian. In case of a rain delay, fireworks will be at 9:45 p.m. Sunday.

Church services, hosted by Washington Reformation UCC, will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Montesian Gardens. Those who attend should bring their lawn chairs.

Following the church services, a chicken barbecue lunch, sponsored by Monticello Community Club, will be held. The group is serving half chicken dinners or just chicken. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. at the Octagon Shelter. Prices are $9 for an adult dinner and $6 for a child's dinner or just chicken. Carry-outs are available. Delivery service is also available for senior citizens and handicapped or disabled persons within the village limits. For delivery, call 608-426-1843 before 7 p.m. Saturday, July 13.

The parade will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the east end of Lake Avenue and will proceed through to the north end of Main Street. Parade entries and monetary donations, to help sponsor some of the unique entries, are still being accepted. After the parade, the Zweifel Brothers will be at the main beer stand performing until 6 p.m. Dan Riley will perform from 7 to 11 p.m.

A raffle drawing will be held at 9 p.m. The raffle will include cash ($500, $250, $100, $50, $50), Brewers tickets (valued at $200), chair cooler (chair with a built-in cooler valued at $150), wheelbarrow and Harley Davidson cooler. Raffle tickets are $5 for a book of six or $1 each and can be purchased now at Monticello businesses or from any member of the Monticello Community Club. During homecoming, tickets are available at the beer stand. Proceeds always go back to the community.

A bean bag competition will be held at 3 p.m. at the baseball beer tent. The cost is $10 per co-ed two-person team. To pre-register, contact Andrew Anderson at 608-279-1430.

The class of 1969 will be having its class reunion on July 12 at Barnaby's. In memory of Ralph Zimmerman, Curt Wagner and Linda Trumpy, the class is having a raffle of a Toshiba 50-inch TV. Tickets are available at Barnaby's, Lucky's Farm Tavern, M&M Café and the Rathskeller Bar. One ticket is $5 and five tickets are $20. The drawing will be at 9 p.m. July 12 at Barnaby's.
