BARRON - Monticello FFA participated in the 2013 State Soils Judging Contest on July 9 at Alex and Mary Olson's "Breezy Hill" Dairy Farm - the site of the 2013 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days.

For the third time in five years, Monticello FFA members will be heading to the National Land and Range Judging Competition in Oklahoma City, Okla., in May.

The Monticello FFA Senior Soils Judging Team consists of Forrest Havens, Mackenzie Zanow, Clare Gietzel and Lucas Marty. They took third place. Havens was the highest-scoring individual for the team, with a 326 out of 400 points, ranking him second place individually throughout the whole contest.

The Junior Team consisted of Paige Dilley, Samantha DeVoe and Kody Klitzke. Dilley was the highest-scoring individual for the team and earned a trophy by placing third overall in the junior division. Soils judging assesses students' abilities to evaluate land sites and soils for erosion potential, texture, structure, fertility requirements, drainage issues and conservation practices.
